About the Certificates

Recognizing the need for education in the fields of disaster preparedness, homeland security, and emergency management, NIU created homeland security certificates and identified 5 key areas where specific education is needed. Each track begins with the Foundations in Homeland Security and Disaster Preparedness course, but then becomes more tailored to each specific subject area. You may earn a Homeland Security Certificate on its own, or while achieving your bachelor's or master's degree.

In 2006 the DCEO and Illinois Board of Higher Education recognized that offering adequate homeland security, disaster preparedness, and emergency management education statewide requires sharing resources and unique expertise located in various universities. Visit Illinois IDEA HS for more information on the Homeland Security alliance and how you can benefit from homeland security, disaster preparedness, and emergency management courses offered at other Illinois public institutions.

With support from the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO), Northern Illinois University created the Foundations in Homeland Security and Disaster Preparedness courses for use by universities across Illinois.

Pilot tested at NIU, the Foundations in Homeland Security and Disaster Preparedness courses are an interactive online experience offering an overview of issues that threaten public safety and commerce and focus on the following aspects of an emergency:

  • Planning
  • Hazard recognition
  • Mitigation
  • Response and recovery
