The Summer Conference Housing and Dining Center (SCHD) at Northern Illinois University maintains non-smoking, air-conditioned residence halls for overnight accommodations and dining services. Your residence hall front desk is staffed 24 hours a day. We will do everything we can to assist you. The following guidelines should help you know what to expect during your stay.
Ask your conference/camp organizer for your check-in times. At check-in you will receive your room key. If your group has contracted for meals, you will also receive a meal card. Our staff will ask that you sign for your key (and meal card) and will discuss some of the items outlined below.
NOTE: There is a $150.00 lost key charge.
Your key accesses both your assigned floor and your room. SCC elevators operate on a security “key-up” system that allows each guest onto only their assigned floor. To visit guests on other floors, arrange to meet them in the lobby so they can escort you to their floor. You can use the “house phones” (at no charge) in the lobby for this.
Grant Towers: Your key will be marked with either “A” or “B” which stands for the side of the room you were assigned. In Grant Towers the “A” side of the room has the wall phone and the “B” side has the wall mirror. Each side of the room has a desk with a drawer that locks with the appropriate key for that side.
Stevenson Towers: The desks do not have locks on them, but you are welcome to bring a padlock to use on your closet.
If your group has contracted for residence hall meals, your conference organizer will tell you in which hall you will eat. You will need your meal card to enter the dining hall. The dining hall has a “cafeteria-style” set-up and offers a salad bar and a variety of hot entrees, all with unlimited second helpings. The different selections include at least one daily vegetarian dish, so you should find many things to enjoy.
Weekday meal times are: Breakfast @ 7-9 a.m., Lunch @ 11:30-1 p.m., Dinner @ 5-6 p.m., unless otherwise contracted by your group. Saturday and Sunday meal times are: Breakfast @ 7-9 a.m., Lunch @ Noon-1 p.m., Dinner @ 5-6 p.m.
The telephone in each room accepts incoming calls (but not “collect” calls). You can ask the front desk staff for the phone number for your room. When calling out, all on-campus and local calls are free. To place long distance calls, you will need to use a calling card or dial collect. You can also make long distance calls on the lobby pay phone.
Each floor has two community bathrooms. If your group has co-ed accommodations, there will be one bathroom for each gender per floor. Otherwise, both bathrooms will be available to the entire floor. Bathrooms have curtained shower and dressing area for increased privacy.
Stevenson Towers: In addition to the above, Stevenson has two suites per floor where guests in the two bedrooms of the suite share a bathroom within the suite. Your conference organizer will tell you if you are staying in a suite with a bath.
We ask that you use only the main lobby doors when entering the building. These doors are open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., after which you should enter through the center front doors. A door guard is on duty at these doors from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. Only overnight guests are allowed o enter after 11 p.m. The guard will need to see your key and will ask your name and name of your conference/camp. If you plan to have visitors after 11 p.m., you will need to meet them in the lobby and register them at our front desk.
