POLS 497: PWE1 - Small-Group Study in Political Science

February 28, March 9 - 13 and 21, 2014


Students and faculty will travel to the nation's capital for an intensive five-day, four-night, hands-on seminar in government and politics. We will tour and meet officials at the White House, Congress, and Supreme Court as well as network with DC-area alumni. The travel portion will take place during spring break.

Course Requirements
Students are required to attend a February 28 mandatory orientation meeting, as well as, all program events in Washington, DC. Readings will be posted on Blackboard and students taking the course for credit are required to keep a journal of their experiences during the trip. The journal is due at the mandatory debriefing meeting on March 21. The course grade will be based on the journal as well as attendance and participation at the mandatory meetings at NIU and the events in DC.

In order to receive a one (1) credit hour grade, students must enroll in POLS 497: PWE1, spring 2014, through MyNIU as well as submit a complete registration form and deposit to CLAS External Programming.
Students who wish to take part in the course for no credit may also do so and should not enroll through MyNIU, but submit a complete registration form and deposit to CLAS External Programming.

Program Fee: $949

The program fee includes four-night hotel accommodations (double-occupancy), March 9 dinner, DC alumni reception, and a pre-paid Metro Card for subway transportation in DC. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from DC.

A non-refundable deposit of $250 is due by January 24, 2014, with the balance due by February 21, 2014.

Students will share rooms (two students per room) with two queen beds at the Doubletree Suites located at 1515 Rhode Island Ave. NW, in the heart of DC and within walking distance to Dupont Circle and the White House. The hotel has a fitness center, restaurant, and is close to Metro stops, restaurants, and attractions.

Students are responsible for making their own travel arrangements to the Dulles International Airport (IAD) or Reagan Nation Airport (DCA). A pre-paid Metro card will be provided for program-related subway transportation in Washington, DC.

Academic Credit Option
NIU students may register for 1 academic credit for this program. Students choosing this option should register for POLS 497: PWE1 through MyNIU. This is a permit-only course; for more information and/or a permit number, please contact CLAS External Programming at (815) 753-5200 or Regular off-campus tuition and fees will be applied to your NIU bursar account and are in addition to the program travel fee.

Program Fee: Only $949 includes scheduled visits and activities, ground transportation for program-related activities in DC, four nights lodging in DC (double occupancy), and one dinner. Please note that round-trip transportation to/from DC, extra meals, and study materials are not included in the program travel fee. The program fee does not include tuition and fees; you will be billed separately by the Bursar's office.

Please Note: NIU's fee for the package combines organization visits, accommodations, meals specified above, and program related ground transportation. Fee reduction(s) or refunds CANNOT be made for unused portions of the package.

Payment: A non-refundable deposit of $250 is required with a completed registration form by January 24, 2014. A permit number will not be issued without full payment of the deposit. All program fees must be paid in full (no exceptions) by February 21, 2014.
