Education

  • Ph.D. in Theoretical & Applied Mechanics, Cornell University (1995).
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Cornell University (1991).

Industrial Experience

  • Consultant, United Technologies Research Center, Hartford, CT (1997 – 2002).
  • Engineer, Hughes Aircraft Company, El Segundo, CA (1989 – 1991).

Research Interests:

Dynamics & Control. Dr. Coller’s primary area of research is in the areas of nonlinear dynamical systems, bifurcation theory, and nonlinear control. Applications have included turbulent boundary layers, aerodynamic instabilities in jet aircraft engines, aeroelasticity, and vortex dynamics in bluff body flows. He is beginning to get involved in traffic dynamics. The research has a strong theoretical component, complemented by numerical simulation. In this area of research, Dr. Coller tends to focus on fundamental dynamics and modeling questions rather than specific practical problems.

Engineering Education. In recent years, Dr. Coller’s dabblings in engineering education have blossomed into full-fledged research projects. He develops video games for teaching core mechanical engineering courses, and then studies their effects on student learning and motivation.

Research Funding

Dr. Coller has received more than $500K in funding from the National Science Foundation with projects in both areas of research.
