The performances are at 7:30 p.m. today, Tuesday, Feb. 25, and Thursday, Feb. 27, in the Diversions Lounge in the Holmes Student Center. There is a suggested $6 donation at the door.

Friends of NIU Libraries to host author

Former DeKalb resident Richard Powers will read from his second novel, "The Time of Our Singing," at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, in the Staff Lounge on the lower level of Founders Memorial Library.

Powers' new book is "a sprawling generational study with the properly ambitious themes of racial identity, the iterations of history and the power of music."

A professor at the University of Illinois, Powers is the author of eight novels, including "Prisoner's Dilemma," set in DeKalb. He is the recipient of numerous academic awards, including the James Fennimore Cooper Prize from the American Society of Historians, the Vursell Prize from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, a MacArthur Fellow and a Lannan Literary Award.

There will be an opportunity for discussion and light refreshments after the presentation.

Applications invited for
2003 Multicultural Curriculum Transformation Institute

The Office of the Provost and the Provost's Task Force on Multicultural Curriculum Transformation are pleased to announce NIU's 10th annual Multicultural Curriculum Transformation Institute, to be held May 13 through 21.

Tenured and tenure-track faculty and supportive professional staff are invited to apply and participate in this intensive institute, which is designed to assist faculty and staff in incorporating multicultural perspectives and content into their courses, enrich their curricula and prepare NIU students for a diverse workplace and society.

Faculty members interested in participating in the full institute are encouraged to apply for Multicultural Curriculum Transformation Awards. Selected faculty each will receive a $1,000 stipend to support specific curriculum transformation projects such as developing new courses or revising existing courses to address multicultural issues.

Supportive professional staff on 12-month contracts cannot receive the $1,000 award. Limited funds are available for the awards.

March 3 is the application deadline.

Over the past nine summers, more than 150 NIU faculty members have received awards to participate in multicultural institutes and transform their courses. The complete schedule for this summer's institute will be available later this spring and also will be posted on the task force Web site at http://www.niu.edu/mcti. For more information, call task force chair LaVerne Gyant at 753-1423 or e-mail mcti@niu.edu.

NIU to host conference on race, children

NIU will host a conference on the issue of race as it relates to young children from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, in the Holmes Student Center.

The conference, titled "The Other 3 Rs: Reality, Racism and Respect," is being offered free of charge for students studying for careers in teaching, educators, day care providers and all others with an interest in the young child. The event hosts are the NIU Early Childhood Studies Program Steering Committee and the NIU Early Childhood Studies Professional Advisory Committee.

Joe Feagin, a professor of sociology at the University of Florida, will speak on the racial views developed by young children (ages 3 to 5) and the denial that many adults have in this regard. Also addressing the conference will be June Gordon, an associate professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz, who specializes in comparative urban education, focusing on how economics impacts the educational access and success of marginalized students in the United State, Britain and Japan.

Each presenter will conduct two sessions during the day so that all participants can hear both speakers.

To register, contact Carrie Blackwood at 753-8362 no later than Friday, Feb. 28. A continental breakfast will be available for all attendees, and lunch will be provided for the first 200 registrants.

Deadlines set for Fiscal Year 2003 requests

Fiscal Year 2003 will soon be closing and cut-off dates must be established.

These dates are mainly pertinent to FY2003 orders using General Revenue funds, but the same dating conventions are followed for orders using other fund sources. Please keep in mind that the last quarter of the fiscal year is the busiest for Procurement Services and the Accounting Office, with their departments simultaneously preparing to close out FY2003 and processing, bidding and issuing orders for FY2004.

State law requires that all FY2003 General Revenue orders be completed, including all payments, at the end of the lapse period. Orders must be issued prior to June 30, 2003, and the goods received, invoiced, and all payment paperwork in Accounting no later than Aug. 6, 2003, regardless of dollar amount. This will allow time for processing and payment of invoices here or from Springfield by the Aug. 31 deadline.

If it is known that delivery cannot be completed before the lapse period cut-off date (Aug. 6), the requisition can be cancelled or converted to a FY2004 requisition/order.

The goal is to provide a uniform, quality service to all, but the cut-off dates must be followed strictly to enable the staffs to achieve this level of service for each office and department. This includes meeting all legal requirements, including bidding and any required university approval processes.

Orders more than $250,000: FY03 purchase requests above this level must be received in the Accounting office not later than Feb. 28. The approval process by the Board of Trustees, once bids are completed, begins early in April, requiring that FY03 bids be completed and award selections made by April 4. Again, delivery by the Aug. 6 cut-off is required. FY2004 orders needed early in July will be required at the same time.

Orders of $25,000 up to $250,000: FY03 purchase requests in this range must be in the Accounting office no later than April 15. General Revenue-funded orders in this range are approved at the presidential level but must be bid, approvals given, ordered and delivered, with invoicing completed by Aug. 6.

Orders less than $25,000: FY03 purchase requests less than $25,000 should be received in the Accounting Office and Procurement Services no later than June 2. Requests received after this date will be handled on a case-by-case basis, at the discretion of the buyer. Where competitive opportunities exist, buyers will seek competitive quotations.

Purchase Requests using FY03 General Revenue (02) funds in any amount for new purchases will not be accepted for processing after June 13. If the purchase request has not been received in Accounting by June 13, it will not be processed as an FY2003 order. The same rule will apply to all FY2003 purchase requests using any other fund sources.

Orders from other than General Revenue funds: All goods and/or services from orders funded from locally held funds accounts must be received or services completed and invoice-dated by June 30 to be expensed in FY03. If received after that date, any charges will be charged to your FY2004 budget.

If there are questions, call Procurement Services at 753-1671 or the Accounting Office at 753-1514 now. The staffs are not readily able to do last-minute orders, making it important to submit purchase requests immediately. Being late can mean no purchase order and no products when you want or need them.

FY2004 purchase requests also can be submitted now. Doing so helps to ensure your needs for FY2004 can be met efficiently and in a timely manner.

ITS offers self-service password reset

ITS is pleased to announce the availability of an online, self-service password management tool, WebFoyer. Whether you want to change or reset your Novell network password, one visit to www.webfoyer.niu.edu will allow you to accomplish the task.

Customer Support Center staff members already have reset more than 16,000 Novell passwords this school year for students, faculty and staff. WebFoyer will provide the convenience of 24/7 online availability and also will save time and money.

Full use of this tool requires advance planning. Visit www.webfoyer.niu.edu now and click on "Password Reset" to set up two personal verification questions. Then, if you forget your password or it expires, go to WebFoyer, correctly answer your personal verification questions and reset your own network password.

Costa Rica photo exhibit on display

A photography exhibit of images of Costa Rica is open to the public at The House, 263 E. Lincoln Hwy. The show will be on display for about six weeks, and the images are available for purchase.

The exhibit, titled "Tibas Market: Images of Costa Rica by Francisco Solares-Larrave," consists of nine photographs of people and food, taken during Solares-Larrave's last visit to Costa Rica as a faculty member and teacher at the Costa Rica program of Spanish Language and Culture, run by NIU Study Abroad Office and the Department of Foreign Languages, in which he is a faculty member.

One of the goals of this exhibit is to promote the Costa Rica Spanish language program, aimed at students at the intermediate level interested on the experience of living abroad.
